A New
Twist to Being Spammed
One day Albert, who is a real estate broker with a small office, received a call from his Internet Service Provider which completely baffled him. They told him that they had detected tens of thousands of spam e-mails originating from his computer network. He was told that this spamming activity needed to stop or his Internet access was going to be blocked.
Albert couldn’t understand how this could be true. He called Avisotek to investigate this “spam” allegation. Avisotek discovered that a hacker had successfully accessed his network and planted a spam relay application on two of the three computers on his network. The e-mails being relayed through his network advertised various pornographic sites - so the culprit’s identity was
obvious making it possible to report the activity to the FBI.
Avisotek removed all the spam relay components. Avisotek also installed and configured stronger network protections so this same incident would not occur in the future. It has been a year and a half and there have been no further incidents.
Albert has also enjoyed increased network performance as a result of resolving this issue.
